16th Street is proud to stage Susan Hahn’s 2007 volume of poetry The Scarlet Ibis in its entirety. In this dramatic sequence of poems the Ibis and the Lady are the disappearing objects of the Magician's tricks. As the three vie to control each other, all illusions fall away, forcing them to deal with their assigned roles in time and their own caged mortality.
Directed by Ann Filmer, The Scarlet
Ibis was shown as a staged reading
at Estrogen Fest 2007 and Rhino Fest and is
performed by Amy Dunlap as the Lady, Kathleen
Powers as the Bird, Matt Olson (July 24-26)
and Ed Dzialo (July 31-Aug2) as the Magician.
With orginal music by Barry Bennett and video
by Kristin Reeves this production promises to
be a feast for the eyes and ears.
Susan Hahn is the author of eight volumes of poetry including Holiday (2001), Mother In Summer (2002), Self/Pity (2005), The Scarlet Ibis (2007) and The Note She Left(2008). Her first play Golf was directed by Ann Filmer for Circle Theatre in 2005. Among her honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes and several Illinois Arts Council Awards. Ms. Hahn is the editor of Northwestern’s TriQuarterly literary magazine.
