AUDITIONS for ENFRASCADA

ENFRASCADA (A HOODOO COMEDY OF JARRING PROPORTIONS)
by Tanya Saracho
directed by Keira Fromm
April 5 - May 12, 2012
Press Open April 12
When a terrible split turns Alicia’s world upside down, she turns to Folk Magic to heal her suffering. With the help of her friends and some enchanting magi, Alicia mines the underworlds of Brujeria, Santeria and Hoodoo for magic recipes, age-old traditions and ancient jar spells looking for a cure. Based on real and extended exchanges with practitioners of each craft, Enfrascada explores one of the best-kept secrets in the Latino community. From the author of Kita y Fernanda, Our Lady of the Underpass and El Nogalar.

Roles available:
CAROLINA, Late 20’s/Early-30’s. (Latina of Mexican-descent.) What one would call a Huppie (Hispanic Yuppie). Fresa-ish tendencies but born here. Great heart. There is a lightness to her presence, but she's solid as a rock when it comes to her friends; she's absolutely loyal. She's always put together and has a closet just for shoes. She might have Kardashian hair, but she's not gross and fickle like a Kardashian, ok maybe a little

LULU, 20’s, mixed race. (Latina/White American) That just means she’s a hybrid in more than one way. She is ALICIA’s cousin and nobody really knows what she does for a living, yet she manages quite well. A little eccentric; all that reading might be throwing off her social graces, because there's something odd about the girl. She's never rude though. Sometimes this girl doesn’t go outside of her apartment for weeks. Doesn’t have to. There’s peapod. And cable. And her books, of course

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE PLAYED BY SAME ACTRESS - MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!
(Ages can be representative, a younger or older person may play this track. Must be adept at accents and capable of doing an entire scene in Spanish)
SENORA - CAT, 40’s. Black-American. A conjure woman of the Hoodoo tradition. Lives in Bronzeville (Southside of Chicago) in one of those three flats that have seen better days. Tries to keep her Southern traditions in the urban center, while being a single mom to her daughter ROMINA, who’s a smartie.
SENORA - MARTA, Late 60’s. A Cuban national. Left Cuba because of Castro and has never returned.. All her family's in Puerto Rico now, so she mixes lexicons. She lives in Logan Square, is on a budget and wears a coiffed blond wig with her sweatpants and Betty Boop t-shirts. She is loud and boisterous, unless she thinks the neighbors are listening, then she’s back in Havana circa 1961.
SENORA - KARINA, 40 years old. An undocumented, Mexican national. Even-tempered, kind-hearted woman. She’s been in Chicago about a decade yet still doesn’t speak much English. She speaks in Nauahtl to her children, the Aztec tongue. Her talent is real.

Compensation:
Non-equity pay is $75 per week for rehearsal and performance.
AEA is CAT Tier N ($171 per week) plus full health
